II Baltic Sea Spartakiade
The II. International Baltic Sea Spartakiade was carried out on Rügen between the 4th and 7th of June 1998.
Athletes from six of the seven B7 islands took part in that year´s Spartakiade. From the Åland islands arrived only a team of observers. Furthermore, other partner regions of Rügen from Poland, South Sweden, Lithuania and France took part. It was a celebration with over 600 boys and girls - a new participation record.
The Spartakiade was opened from an eight-years-old track-and-field athlete, who was allowed to carry the flame of the Spartakiade and to light the fire in the stadium. The two sisters Marie-Louise and Linda Sophie sang the inauguaral song.
Events in footbal, volleyball and track-and-field took place. The best athletes got medals, diplomas and cups.
The home team managed a good performance in football, the boys´ and the girls´ classes won gold. The boys´ team from Estonia and the girls´ team from Poland could triumph in volleyball.
The most successful team with six gold medals was from Saaremaa (Estonia) followed from Rügen (Germany) with four gold medals won by the track-and-field athletes Anja Klöckner and Aileen Heuer and, as mentioned before, in football.
The meeting was closed with an official medal ceremony, a discotheque and a lasershow as the highlight. The basic idea was bringing young B7 islanders together. This was a success. There were closed many friendships.
Many thanks to the main organizers, the Sports Club „Am Rugard“ from Bergen auf Rügen.
Many thanks to all the sponsors and voluntary helpers and, of course, to the B7 organisation who helped to carry out the contests successfully.
